Supply teachers or relief teachers have grown in numbers and in demand over the past decade. For many, this type of work is a career choice as it offers flexibility and can accommodate other commitments such as carer responsibilities or perhaps in the case of overseas trained teachers, it facilitates regular travel.
Schools require supply teachers for a variety of reasons. Covering a teacher who is absent due to sickness or replacing a teacher whilst they are away on maternity leave are just two examples of when a school will call on Teaching Personnel to provide them with a supply teacher. Supply teaching assignments vary in duration from one day right up to a full academic year.
